We arrived in Kuala Lumpur by train. The train station is truly magnificent. Much of Malaysia is Muslim, and many of the buildings also reflect this influence. In this picture you can barely make out the outline of what the city claims to be the tallest building in the world, assuming you count the giant needle that stands on the top. There are two of these towers standing next to each other. They look like giant syringes. Kuala Lumpur is a busy city. Singapore was full of people, but somehow KL was very different. In some ways it seemed more like an American city - the streets were clogged with cars, the sidewalks were dirty, and it just had that sort of sweaty bustle to it. It was extremely hot when we were there, so we were excited to find a hotel with air conditioning. The manager showed us to our room and proudly showed us the "air conditioner" - a ceiling fan. |
