At first this applet looks rather complicated, but if you play around with the different controls and pay attention to the help box at the bottom right you should be able to figure it out fairly easily.

To get the thing going right away, try changing the three vertical slider controls on the right, they control the rotation of the sine waves. Next try changing the number of high and low sine waves using the controls at the top left.
