At the base of the Christopher Columbus Monument

Barcelona

Our first stop in Spain was Barcelona - a beautiful and bustling city. Barcelona had a great outdoor feel. La Rambla, a touristy district marked by a large boulevard filled with cafes, little stores, and amazing street performers was the starting point for our tour.

Unfortunately, things did not start out so great - we had a terrible time finding accommodations. The ones we had made in advance disappeared on us - the owner claiming that we had never called him before and hanging up on us. Finally we did find a small hotel that had room for us, and in fact it was in a very nice location close to the center of town.

Sangria along La Rambla

We sampled some sangria, went to La Sagrada Familia - an absolutely amazing cathedral still being constructed based on plans by Gaudi, and visited some of the city's museums.

Gaudi's architecture was some of the most interesting I'd seen. Massive spirals rose up from the ground, and intricate sculptures covered everything. There were no sharp lines, but instead soft curves that rose up to form the structure.

La Sagrada Familia's unusual "steeples" and some close ups of its sculpture.
